Personal Project #1: Mobile PhotographyFor my first personal project I will be looking at mobile photography. Mobile photography is a name given to photographic images taken on mobile devices such as a phone, Ipod or tablet computer. During my journey through this new innovation I will be researching current mobile photographers for inspiration whilst experimenting in taking my own photos. To the right is a video that explains why mobile photography is so popular.

The main advantages of mobile photography are:
Some of the disadvantages are:
- You always have your mobile phone with you so if you see a photo opportunity then all you need to do is point and shoot.
- There are lots of apps you can get on your mobile that you cannot get on a normal camera.
- You can share your pictures instantly to social networking sites such as, Flickr or Tumblr.
- Mobile phones are more compact and easier to carry around.
Some of the disadvantages are:
- Phone camera lenses are often low resolution so the images produced may turn out very pixelated.
- If there is low light then the picture will blur more than usual.
- It is easy to rely on the mobile device to create the picture for you.
Oliver Lang - Mobile photographer
Oliver Lang is an Australian mobile photographer based in Sydney and London. He is one of my favourite mobile photographers because he captures moments in everyday life which most people would not notice but they are very beautiful and interesting. He is going to be my influence for the mobile photographs I create.

|
My task is as follows:
- Beginning with the work of Oliver Lang, I will research mobile photography - tools, apps, photographers etc.
- I will experiment with the school’s iPod Touch devices (and my own equipment). I will refine my work and ideas. I will develop a theme for your project e.g. patterns, shadows, texture, movement etc. that helps to connect my images.
- I will document my research, ideas, experiments and observations on this website.
- I will present at least 10 images that I consider to be successful. I will evaluate my final images, describing how they relate to my research and experiments.
Photoset #1The series of photo below are ones which I took using an ipad in school. My two favourite images are firstly the one of the battered plastic chair infront of a rundown building and secondly the image of the dandelion. I think both the images are simplistic but nicely composed and I love the effects.

Home learning experiment #1Here are some pictures I took using my HTC phone and an editing app called little photo. This isn't a particularly good app but there are a couple of editing tools which are useful. This was a task set for homework to kick start the new unit of mobile photography. I found it a little tricky at first but once I began to feel confident in taking the pictures it became easy and enjoyable.

ExhibitionsOn 28 November I visited Somerset House on a school trip to see two exhibitions - Cartier-Bresson: A Question of Colour and Tim Walker: Story Teller. The two exhibitions were very different from one an other, the first told a fairytale story through fashion photography and the second took a realistic approach, nothing appeared to be posed for.

This was my favourite picture in the Cartier-Bresson exhibition. It's by Ernst Haas who is famous for his pioneering colour street photography. I love the normality of it because none of the people know they are having they're photo taken so they just look completely natural. I also like the odd pop of colour the balloon brings to the image it makes your eye move away from the figures and creates a new focus point. |
Final outcome
The pictures in the slideshow below were taken on on an ipod touch whilst I was out on the trip to Somerset house. I like the vast majority of the images I took but I think a few of them could have been improved. This is due to various reasons such as: poor composition, dull subject matter or just no real reason behind taking the picture.
The two images on the left are my favourites out of this set. I like the first image because the texture of the ripples on the water and the way they reflect the light. I also like the way the light is coming in through the opening.
I like the second image because its something people can relate to. The man looks fed up after just missing his train and flustered like he as rushing to catch it. I like the composition of the image as you can see that it is located at a train station and then the man adds some extra detail. |
For this homework I was asked to take images which relate to the theme of patterns or textures. I used my HTC phone, but I did no editing to any of the pictures. Almost all of the images are of patterns with the exception of one textured picture.
